While studying the tragedy, we should not lose sight of dramatic works. In the previous study of tragedies, the study of dramatic texts was merely confined to Greek tragedies, Shakespearian tragedies and the western modern tragedies. However, a thorough study and discussion on the overall characteristics of German tragedies from 1850s-1930s with Schiller, Goethe and Lesssing as representatives have not been made. This paper conducts a thorough study and discussion on the German tragedies as an integral system and an independent cultural phenomenon in the development of western tragedies since ancient Greece, in the evolution of the German ethnic and cultural . Through concrete analysis of the representative works, the paper, in the light of relevant dramatic theories, reveals the overall characteristics of German tragedies and makes a possible generalization of the German tragedies from 1850s to 1930s from the aspect of dramatic aesthetics. |
