The research about "shi"attracts much attention in Chinese study,especially in when and how it evolved into the Copula "shi".The article thinks that the Copula "shi" developed from the "shi"of demonstration. When the component it demonstrated was a noun or a simple noun structure,the function of demonstration was weakened and it's main function changed into linking the subject and the predicate.And this is just the function of the Copula.The main use of "shi"before the Qin dynasty was pronoun,but still some "shi"were used as the Copula. The note worthiness was that some "shP'were obviously the germination of the Copula evolving from the pronoun "shi",because it's main function had evolved into linking the subject and the predicate.The use of "shi"before the Qin dynasty all originated from it's initial meaning of "just"and"right"And this is the most important factor promoting the evolution of "shi".The article contains four parts:The first part mainly points out the meaning and the part of speech of'"shi",the part also brings forward the concept of the Copula and the judgement sentence.The first part makes preparation for the following discussion in concept.The second part discusses that the the main use of "shP'before the Qin dynasty is pronoun,taking the sentences in "shijing"and "lunyu" as the examples.The third part first points out the standard of judging the Copula, then shows that there was copula before the Qin dynasty by analyzing some "shi"in sentences of the day that may be the Copula. The part also discusses that many "shi"are the germination of the Copula.The fourth part mainly argues the reason why "shi"evolved into the Copula. The author thinks that the initial meaning of "just"and"right"of "shi"is the essential reason .and there are also some other reasons in grama and the form.The reason why "shi" evolved into the Copula is the integrated function of many factors.
