Sufficient research on the case study on modal verbs will help discovery the inner principle of the usage of this verb category. Follow the above research thought, the thesis analyzed the modal verb "Yao"(要) from many points of view—syntax function, semantic function, the semantic forming course and the grammaticized process— to give a comment on what were the controversies. On that basis, some complemental research was done.The modal verb "Yao"(要) is a polysemous word in Chinese. From the semantic function aspect, the meaning of the word is so complicated that its lexical items needed to be regulated with modality. And it is necessary to study the manifesting modal sense and the speaker modality. From the grammar function, it is necessary to study the consecutive usage of "Yao"(要), especially to the study the part-of-speech and the meaning of "Yaoxiang"(要想) and "Xiangyao"(想要). The thesis believes that the consecutive usage of "Yao"(要) should be concluded within modal word, including modal adverb, modal verb, modal psychological verb, etc.. "Yaoxiang"(要 想) and "Xiangyao"(想要) are the consecutive usage of modal psychological verb and modal verb, what the two words show is the "Yao"(要) in "Xiangyao"(想要) and "Xiang"(想) in "Yaoxiang"(要想). At last, the thesis studied the forming process of modal verb "Yao"( 要) and also did some complemental research on the grammaticized process on the basis of other former researchers. The thesis investigated and analyzed the mechanism of the forming process and the grammaticized process within the language system. And the thesis concluded that metaphor in the cognitive linguistic is the external reason of the the grammaticized process of "Yao"(要) and the inner reason is the result of language self-sufficiency within the language system and grammar factors.
