Vocabulary is the closest joint of human language and their life experience. In order to express the objective material world and subjective abstract thinking, people should firstly select the appropriate lexicons to express themselves. The history for linguists to study the comparative analysis between English and Chinese words is quite long with lots of works, nevertheless it is fairly rare for any one to compare and study the difference between these two languages from the perspective of connotation and denotation. This paper is based on the study of the history of English and Chinese words, focusing on the research foundation, i.e. connotation and denotation, concluding the development tendency of English and Chinese words. Further more, it analyses the lexical coincidence, parallel, lexical gap in terms of connotation and denotation. Finally it discusses the characteristics of English and Chinese words, i.e. English directness and Chinese indirectness and the corresponding methods used in the practice of English and Chinese translation. |
