Context is organic, changing surroundings which enable both speakers and listeners in the communicative process to interact. It is only in the context that the linguistic expressions of interaction can be communicatively interpretable. At first, this paper discusses the concept of context in the academic circles at home and abroad, and then indicates the four features of context, that is definiteness, relativity, coherence and dynamics, and then gives an outline of the context that domestic and foreign scholars expound. This paper expounds six functions of context that is omissible function, simplification function, definiteness function, explanation function, generative function and restrictive function. Finally, this paper aims at maximally implementing the functions of context by way of the features of utterance, setting, behavior context, out-context knowledge and cognitive context.
