Qian Zhongshu is a great writer in academy, culture and ideology field in the twentieth century .He makes great achievement in both academic study and literary creation. Fortress Be sieged, a famous long novel of him, contains profound philosophy, excellent artistic skill, rich metaphor and humorous style. The book also shows the author's solid literature foundation.Through studying images of intellectuals in Fortress Be sieged, this paper tries to give a detail analysis about personality of intellectuals and probe into the cultural reason of its forming. The paper also reveals the author's satire and criticism on personality of the intellectuals. Meanwhile, it suggests the ideal one.The first part of the paper divides the intellectuals into three groups and shows their different personality. The first groups of intellectuals are professors among some overseas students and in San Lu University. Their personality is hypocrisy while Fang Hongjian and Zhao Xinmei belong to the second group, they are sincere, the last group is female intellectuals who are hypocritical, too.The second part of paper reveals the reason why such birds of personality form. It extends from social and cultural perspective and through analysis about pressure that the living condition puts on intellectuals, accumulation of traditional culture and influence of culture conflict between China and the west countries on intellectuals of traditional culture and influence of culture conflict between China and West countries on intellectuals.The third part interprets the ideal personality in the author's minds, by negating and criticizing the first and the third group of intellectuals, showing sympathy on Fang Hongjian, appreciating Zhao Xinmei and Tang Xiaofu.
