Succeeding Sun Yirang, Luo Zhenyu, Wang Guowei and Guo Moruo, Tang Lan is one who has made great achievements in the study of inscriptions on bones and tortoise shells. He has made important contribution to the explanation, pronunciation and formation of ancient writing: succeeding the former scholars' approach, he has verified and explained more than one hundred characters of inscriptions on bones, and moreover, made the approach systemized and scientized, promoting the study on inscriptions to develop in a scientific way. After overall analyzing on the formation and evolvement of ancient writing, he animadverts on the traditional theory in "LiuShu" and puts forward a new theory on the formation of Chinese-"San Shu". All he has done brings great influence on academia.Compared with the contemporary scholars in ancient writing, Tang Lan has ranked on the top, no matter in the explanation and pronunciation of inscriptions on bones,or in the construct of ancient writing theory. However, since his book was published, few people have done any overall research on it, so I take it as the subject of my thesis. The thesis is composed of three parts:The first part is about the verification and explanation of inscriptions on bones. The thesis reviews the features of the methods that Tang Lan has used for verifying and explaining inscriptions on bones, which include associating the verification and explanation of inscriptions on bones with history and culture, bringing inscriptions on bones and other ancient writing into comparison and having verified and explained some difficult characters and key words. The second part is the comments on Tang Lan's Methods for verifying and explaining ancient writing. The thesis elaborates four basic methods he has summarized and their effects on the future. The third part is to judge Tang Lan's contributions to the construct of ancient writing theory, which include the age and individual factors contained in "San Shu";criticism on "Liu Shu";the content, the significance, the deficiencies and the influence of "San Shu".
