On The Relations Between Champa And The Song Dynasty

Zhancheng was established in192, called Linyi initially in history of China, and Huanwang after Tang Dynasty, and Zhancheng after HouZhou Dynasty and Song Dynasty, but It called itself Champa-pura. From establishment to perish for more than 1500 years between, It always kept with China close. 968 was a watershed on the relationship' history ofZhancheng-China. Before this, the relationship of two countries was basically the Clan and vassal one which tribute and war featured. "Freedom" of Jiaozhi ( Viet Nam ) in 968 made Champa-China relationship changed qualitatively. In the aspect of political relationship,without turmoil of war since then,living in harmony, friendly come-and-go becoming main stream, two countries established the relationship of major feature of tribute and trade between Song-Zhancheng. Zhancheng frequently payed tribute to Song, while Song also returned grant and conferment. At the same time, because Jiaozhi harassed the territory of two countries continuously, common confrontation with Jiaozhi was added to the political relationship of Song -Zhancheng. So forming, among Song, Zhancheng, Jiaozhi, extremely complex triangle relationship. Besides, the relationship between Cambodia and Zhancheng also affected the political relationship of Song-Zhancheng. In the aspect of trade relationship, Song Dynasty and Zhancheng had official monopoly of tributary trade relationship, also had the vessel business relationship. In the former, Zhancheng went Song, times many, rank high, goods rich and unwieldy. And Song returned more,and had different forms of grant specially. Both countrys unceasingly pushed tributary trade to climax. Because of the change of Song domestic and international situations, two countries' tributary trade went through, from the flourish to decline, three stages. At the same time, the vessel trade of two countries again developed. Encouragement of Song's foreign trade policy madetributary trade betweeen two countries very prosperous. Tributary trade and vessel trade promoted the economic and cultural exchange of two countries maximumly. With Zhancheng-Song's long-term social contacts, from different reasons, or asylum, or trading etc. Many people of Zhancheng came and resided in China, even settled down. Persons of Song also moved to Zhancheng, the reason being not identical. These immigrants attended labour respectively in country held, and promoted the development of local economics and culture. Cultural exchange was two-way and crossing-over, and cultural intercourse's contents was very rich. The relationship of Song-Zhancheng had deep backgrounds and a long historical origin. It was this kind of the social contact of mutiple level and the whole aspect that solidly builded the mansion of relationship of friendly neighbouring country between Song and Zhancheng.
