Vietnam and China share the same border. Their cultural exchange has seen a long history. The development of the Vietnamese script can be divided into three periods: i/ the Chinese script; ii/ the Nom script and the Chinese script coexist; and iii/ the modern Vietnamese script. The Vietnamese script has evolved in close connection with the Chinese script. This constitutes one of the special features in the culture of Vietnam.Over the course of history, Vietnam came under the Chinese domination for nearly 1000 years. Consequently, Chinese script-based culture exerted great influence on Vietnam for a very long time. The Chinese rulers brought their culture to Vietnam, of which Chinese script had greatest influence on the Vietnamese culture. Chinese script was used officially in Vietnam for a long time.Looking back at history, after Qin Shi Huangdi united six states, he advanced southwards to conquer Bach Viet and set up districts there In 207 BC, taking avail of the dissocder caused by peasants' uprisings in the Qin Dynasty, Zhao Da, the military chief of Nan Hai district, conquered Gui Lin and Tuong districts (present-day the northern and central regions of Vietnam). He declared himself King Nam Viet Vuong and establishedthe Nam Viet court. He divided Tuong district into Giao Chi and Cuu Chan districts. From the Qin Dynasty to the 10th century, the northern region of Vietnam was under direct domination of the feudal dynasties in China. In 939, Vietnam came out of this domination as the Tang Dynasty fell into a crisis. Since then till the 19th century, Vietnam was an independent country, though still recognized China as the "head of the major lineage in the family" and maintained the relation with China on the basis of a subordinate lineage to the major lineage.Under nearly 1000 years under the domination of different Chinese feudal dynasties, Vietnam was involved in the orbit of Chinese script-based culture. Chinese script held a unique role in Vietnam. Tran Trong Kim (1883-1953), a famous Vietnamese historian once said: "Regardless of sex or age, anyone who goes to school must study Chinese history and Chinese script..." (Tran Trong Kim, Complete works on foreign words). In such a historical context, given the age-old cultural exchange between the two countries, that Vietnam used Chinese script is unavoidable. As such, Sino-Vietnamese words emerged in the vocabulary of the Vietnamese language. Over 1000 years, the number of Sino-Vietnamese words has grown continuously and perfected. Studying the evolution of Sino-Vietnamese words is the matter of great concern of Vietnamese language researchers. Therefore, this thesis focuses on"words coined from Sino-Vietnamese lexicon" and presents observations, researches, and views. This thesis comes into four parts. The first part introduces the meaning and purpose of the research and suggests the scope, subject and method of research. It also introduces the newly-coined Sino Vietnamese words which are referred to in this thesis. The second part presents some of the achievements made by researchers of Vietnamese and Chinese scripts in Vietnam and abroad. It gives a summary of Vietnamese language, its natures and its characteristics. It also provides a general introduction of Sino-Vietnamese words, the Nom script (demotic scrip), and the Vietnamese language, with a special focus on different types of Sino-Vietnamese words and their characteristics. The third part distinguishes between Sino-Vietnamese words and words coined from Sino-Vietnamese lexicon. It also presents the observations on and the analyses of the issues related to the words coined from Sino-Vietnamese lexicon and draws some conclusions. The fourth part introduces the usage, tendency and development of Sino-Vietnamese words. It mentions the position of Sino-Vietnamese words in science, literature, and daily life. It also touches on the use of Sino-Vietnamese words now in Vietnam. Finally, it suggests some ideas about the borrowing and use of Vietnamese lexicon of Chinese origin. This thesis will be very useful for t...
