| Through careful reading of Wayne WANG's work, the thesis attempt to study his cultural identity. Wayne Wang is a very unique director, different from other Asian directors like John Woo and An Lee. He made film within the Hollywood system, ever since the very beginning. His film was about Asian people but there is more than that. The stories are universal and his storytelling is very Hollywood, but he began as an independent director. So the thesis use the way of comparing to discuss how the director make the "Chinese" and "American" figure. The chapter one is about the Chinese-American's history and Wayne Wang's work history. He uses some strategy to go into the mainstream of Hollywood. So I also discuss the Chinese-American independent history. The chapter two is about how Wayne Wang made "Chinese" figure and how he identified the Chinese culture. I make his work on the background of Chinese figure history on American screen. The chapter three is about how Wayne Wang made "American" figure and how he identified the American culture. At last I make a conclusion what the director's culture identity. |
