| Postgraduate Dissertation AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of the conductor in analyzing and interpreting music as well as the importance of music analysis and interpretation. Two chorus based on Mao Zedong's poemsandare cited in the paper for illustration purposes.This paper consists of five parts: Part I: IntroductionThe introduction part serves to provide a brief recount of the purpose and techniques of conducting. Part II: Music AnalysisThis part focuses on the analysis of music, including the definition and necessity of music analysis, as well as the what, how and why of music analysis. There are three sections which discuss music analysis from the perspectives of composition background, lyric message and composing skills. Part III: Music InterpretationThis part analyzes the interpretation of music works, including the definition and necessity of music interpretation, as well as the what, how and why of music interpretation. There are four sections which discuss music interpretation from the perspectives of tempo, dynamics, expression and vertical and horizontal lines of music. Part IV: The Importance of Making Correct Music Analysis and InterpretationThe final conclusion is drawn on the basis of analyses made in the previous two parts covering (1) the interrelation between music analysis and music interpretation with the former serving as a basis and prerequisite for the latter; (2) the importance of music analysis and interpretation lies in the fact that the creation of perfect musical images comes from correct analysis and proper interpretation of music works. The paper then concludes by noting that making correct analysis and interpretation of music works is the basis and precondition for successful manifestation of music.
