This article starts from cultural differences between China and Spain. First, it briefly described the history developing trend at the end of Ming Dynasty, which has a special place at Chinese history development. And it also discusses the principal history of Spain from 1750'S to 1850 'S, which is the same history period as the Ming Dynasty. Then, by comparing the different developing background of portrait between two countries, the article begins to discuss the essential developing and changing of China traditional portrait. Also it mentioned traditional realism of Spanish portrait. Finally, it mainly focused on discussing two pianists, Chen Hongshou and Velazquez. They both lived at the same history period. And their lives and works transmitted two different characteristics of two different cultural circumstances. More over, another Chinese portraitist was mentioned. His name is Zeng Jing. He is especially good at absorbing strongpoint form European painting and combining it with traditional portrait skills. Then he used this in his works.Works of those three portraitists possessed their own typical characteristics that can perfectly present their own cultural background. Why did those three people be mentioned in this article? Because at the moment, which cultural conf liction and collection of Chinese portrait is more frequency than usual, inheriting or directly taking, tradition and creation, these questions need to be considered clearly and cautiously when we are looking back the history. And we need to find a future development direction for those questions. The writer hope this article could bring some enlightenment for searching an orientation for portrait at the present age.
