The dissertation puts Liu Yuxi , a famous Tang Dynasty poet, into the specific time background of Mid Tang Dynasty. First describing his frustration in politics and then focusing on the change of mind in the period of his banishment from the court, the thesis, based on time sequence, is divided into the early, the middle and the latter periods of the banishment in order to explore and analyze the different characteristics of his respective state of mind during the three periods, in an effort to bring to light the diachronic variations of his mind in a full-view scene and to further analyze his moral quality. The thesis attempts to break through the extraction and isolation in the research of his mind and endeavors to grasp the course of his life and emotion in a comprehensive and dynamic way. The focus on the ancient people's spiritual world has not only its influence on the present time but also on the real-life society, which will in turn inspire the present people to think about the life and choices in it.The states of mind in the three periods take on different characteristics, with the early period featuring depression and introspection; the middle period, reason and peace; the latter period, unrestraint and self-ease. During the whole time of banishment, he cared about and tried to adapt to the real life survival, and pursued for and firmly defended the ideal moral quality as well. The overall trend of his state of mind presents the change from repression to freedom, i.e. he extricates himself from the powerful pressure that overwhelms his mind and eventually possesses a more relaxing frame of mind and consciousness. What merits special attention is that during this process, on one hand, he bases himself upon his own side all along and sticks to the basic principles of life, on the other hand, he denies escaping and transcending the worldly affairs, thus being closer to the real life and humanity. In exploring and analyzing Liu's states of mind during his banishment, the thesis not only casts back to his thoughts and choices on the traditional culture but also gives consideration to his specific time of living and the change of life style, meanwhile, it keeps eyes on his differentiation and peculiarity compared with his contemporaries and gives prominence to his moral quality and prototype implication.
