Through the analysis of Shanghai city and the fate of women in the 1990s metropolitan women novel of Wang Anyi, the present paper holds that the Shanghai city in Wang Anyi' novels is a particular one. Neither is it the same with Shanghai described by some male authors in history of contemporary literature, nor is the same with the female author Zhang Ailing. It is a particular metropolitan sight. Furthermore, there is both affinity and deviation in the relationship between the modern city and women. The fate of women is a paradox between striving for independence and being unable to obtain complete independence. Furthermore the manners of the fiction exhibition are also particular. The author creates her own women speech, "needle craft" description, expansive narrative space and floating narrative time. There are great values in the 1990s metropolitan women novel of Wang Anyi. She not only inherits the tradition of city literature and women literature, but also makes an innovation, shedding her great sympathy upon human beings. Wang Anyi has already entered a strong and self-conscious rational world. She has become one of a few female authors who are able to face directly writing of male and run neck and neck with them. Perhaps, she is exceeding male authors in a sense. Her novels would have an important effect on the development of Chinese contemporary novels.
