China's modern history was a history suffering from interweaves with the tragic experience. The modern society of China was experiencing a great change and transition. In this society and historical course, traditional intellectuals had played important roles, with the constant invasion of the western countries, the impact of western culture on Chinese traditional culture was strengthening, leading to baffling constantly of traditional culture. While puzzling, the intellectuals realized that difference of the two kinds of culture and explored ceaselessly the solutions to this problem. However, the special historical and geographical conditions had molded their special psychology –the Culture sense of superiority. This kind of psychology had exerted an important influence in the conflict that the Chinese and western culture merged. How to deal with the western culture, some traditional intellectuals embodied a certain state of agony and contradiction. LiuXiChang studied by this thesis was one of them. He was the first vice-embassador and the first embassador of staying Germany in Qing Dynasty. As an early envoy stationed abroad, he arrived developed western capitalist society, experiencing two kinds of different system and civilization, while his impression was direct and representative. So his changes of thoughts reflected the traditional intellectual's generality to a certain extent. But as the individual, this kind of experience of his made him have certain particularity and typicality. This thesis tries hard to begin with era background and reveals this kind of characteristic of his conservative ideas by comparison and analysis.First, I regard some concrete examples as center and compare LiuXiChang's thoughts of himself in different periods, to reveal contradiction and universality of his ideas changing. This embodies in the first part of the thesis mainly—Transmutation orbits of LiuXiChang's conservative ideas.Second, I regard some concrete examples as center to compare LiuXiChang with other historical personages among the same background, in order to stress his particularity and typicality of his conservative ideas. Such as WoRen , who was the court official of the feudal bureaucrat in the domestic country all the time , Gou Hong Dao and Zeng Ji Ze, who were also early envoys abroad. This part of contents are in the second part of the thesis mainly—Explanation under the comparative visual angle .What needs pointing out is that nobady's ideas will never change, different people have different opinions in different stages."we have no reasons to put one's thoughts into certain regular category ", because we can't find the suitable standards at all. Therefore we should know that conservative and open is relative, but not absolute in thoughts.
