This study explored the effect of the competition condition andcognitive style on the.120 middle school students of Grade 2 assubjects.Three independences were conditions ( competition condition vsnone-competiton condition ), cognitive style ( field-dependent vs field-independent)and gender.Dependence was the performance in the transfertest,in which three kinds of problems were involved,that is, ,near transferproblems and far transfer problems. The results indicated: 1.The effects were different of competition condition on transferperformance as for different kinds of transfer problems.There was nosignificant effect of competition condition on students' performance ofisomouphous problems,but there was significant positive effect ofcompetition condition on students' performance of near transfer and fartransfer problems. 2.The effects were different of cognitive style on transferperformance as for different kinds of transfer problems.The isomouphousproblems performance of field-dependent students was significantlybetter than that of field-independent students.As for near transfer and fartransfer problems,there was no significant difference in the perfomance oftow cognitive style students. 3.The effects were different of gender on transfer performance as fordifferent kinds of transfer problems.The far transfer problems'performance'of boys was significantly better than that of girls.As forisomouphous problems and near transfer problems,there was nosignificant difference in the performance of defferent gender students. iii4.As for different kinds of transfer problems,competition condition had differenteffects on different cognitive style students.With regard to the isomouphousproblems,the performance of field-independent students in competition conditionwas significantly better than that in none-competition condition,and thefield-dependent students were opposite.With regard to the near transfer and fartransfer problems,there was no significant difference in the performance of twocognitive style students. 5.As for different kinds of transfer problems,competition conditionhad different effects on different gender students.With regard to fartransfer problems,there was no significant difference in the performance ofboys and girls in none-competition condition,and there was significantdifference in the performance of boys and girls in the competitioncondition,the performance of boys was significantly better than that ofgirls.With regard to the isomouphous problems and near transferproblems,there was no significant difference in the performance of boysand girls.
