This thesis attempts to expound the research accomplishment of Chuang Tzu's doctrine during the period of the New Culture Movement and clarify the academic views, achievements and research characteristics of Hushi, Luxun and Gu Moruo respectively in the domain of study on Chuang Tzu so that to show roughly the development of Chuang Tzu's doctrine in the time of the New Culture Movement.During the period of the New Culture Movement, under the impact of the western culture, the traditional culture received great attention from people at the time, who examined it carefully. In this kind of atmosphere, corresponding changes took place in every aspect of Chuang Tzu's doctrine. The research of Hu Shi, Lu Xun and Gu Moruo, the three representatives of those who studied Chuang Tzu's doctrine during that period of time, have not only opened up the way to propel Chuang Tzu's doctrine from the old ways of learning to the new , but also offered new vision and thinking for the future development of it.The thesis expounded the domain of study on Chuang Tzu by Hushi, Luxun and Gu Moruo respectively from three chapters. The first chapter of the thesis focused on the study of Chuang Tzu by Hushi was interpreted from three aspects, which were philosophy of life, biological evolution and system of logic. Hushi maintained that "sort out and select from our cultural heritage" during the period of the New Culture Movement, claimed to clear the "ghosts" in the traditional culture. As one of the Taoists representatives. Chuang Tzu was the target to be cleared. Hushi believed that Chuang Tzu's philosophy of life made people not only profess life, but also lazy and conservative. It's the chief criminal of poisoning national. The major component of Hushi's study was biological evolution. The West evolution theory was firstly used to explain Chuang Tzu's theory of "everything on earth having the same origin" by Hushi. In the study of system of logic, Hushi completely broke the old way of thinking, indicated that the system of logic was actually logical method, so various school of thoughts consisted of logic. The system of logic contained skepticism and other two aspects of thoughtoThe second chapter of the thesis is focused on the philosophy of life, the system of the idea and the diction of Chuang Tzu. Luxun was disgusted at the craftiness and laziness in Chuang Tzu's philosophy of life. He attributed the blindness of the citizen to it. Meanwhile he appreciated the thought of freedom-valued and individuality- pursuit in Chuang Tzu's idea as well as the beautiful diction of it. As a whole, he took an antipathic attitude to Chuang Tzu considering the spirit of the times. The third chapter of the thesis focused on the study of Chuang Tzu by Gu Moruo is interpreted from four aspects. The first part is about the philosophy of life which is not the emphasis of Gu Moruo therefore the point of views remain similar with those of Hushi and Luxun. The second part talks about the thought of art and literature related with Chuang Tzu. Besides of traditional study of Chuang Tzu, Guo Moruo favors to dig for more idea of Chuang Tzu on art and literature as he is a poet. In the point of views of inditing, he gave a new explanation of Pantheism, absent-ego and the thought which gives the high praise of the Nature from Chuang Tzu and tried to abstract the essence from it. The third part is emphasized on the pectination of the origin of Chuang Tzu's doctrine. Guo Moruo made a conclusion that Chuang Tzu's doctrine originated from Yan which is one school of Confucian. It is Yan that dye the color of superrealism to Chuang Tzu's philosophy of life. The forth part talks about the compare of Chuang Tzu and Huishi. Guo Moruo made the all-around study on Huishi by the limited material and gave analyse on the similarities and differences of the thought of Chuang Tzu and Huishi as well as the cause of formation.
