Abstract/Summary:
The development of lacquer technology has entered its most prosperous stage in the Han dynasty. Lacquer ware of the Han dynasty is famous for its numerous varieties, delicate decorations, and exquisite forms. The Han lacquer has captured people's hearts with its unique beauty and marked a new page in the Chinese lacquer history. Therefore, it is necessary that we develop more ways to better preserve ancient Han lacquers so that they could present themselves to people with their unique beauties. This paper has introduced the origins, development, production, and characteristics of the lacquer. Moreover, it refers to a large amount of literature and pictures to provide a relatively comprehensive introduction of the Han lacquer, including the factors that contribute to its prosperity, its characteristics, and ways of preserving the lacquers from "MaWangDui Han Mu".The first chapter offers a comprehensive introduction of the basic knowledge and production techniques of lacquers. I will answer such questions as when lacquers came into being, how they are made, what the primary methods of painting lacquers are, and finally where their empirical values are.The second chapter recounts the several most important discoveries of the Han lacquers in the country and provides examples both from the archeological literature and from our empirical findings. A number oflacquer wares from the "Mawangdui Han Mu" reflect the exquisiteness, variety, and gorgeousness of the Han lacquer. Then I analyzed the reasons that can explain the its progress in the Han dynasty, its importance in people's life, features of its patterns, and finally its unique characteristics that are closely linked with the historical context. The following chapter proceeds with lacquer's vulnerability to erosions and offers way to preserve it. I have in particular introduced the best method currently available. However, in terms of preserving ancient lacquers, we are now facing a conflict between traditional culture and modern culture, especially in the process of modernization.
