The rapid progress in communication technology and the economic globalization have made intercultural communication an inseparable part of people's life today. However, it is not difficult to find that although the students have received several years of formal English education , they frequently remain deficient in the ability to actually use English , and to understand its appropriate use in normal intercultural communication. It is a problem that attracts people's attention. Now developing students' intercultural communicative competence has been the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching. To develop students' intercultural communicative competence, culture teaching is in vital need in college English teaching.In the hope of improving culture teaching in college English teaching and facilitating students' intercultural communicative competence, this dissertation attempts to explore effective ways of culture teaching for non-English majors in college English teaching. Because few papers discuss the developing of intercultural communicative competence for non-English majors from the perspective of educational anthropology, this dissertation attempt to make some research in this field.Language and culture are closely related to each other. On the one hand, language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it.Without language, culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is language is shaped by culture and it reflects culture. Since language and culture are inseparable, foreign language teaching and culture teaching are also inseparable. The essential purpose of language teaching is not only to teach linguistic knowledge but also to teach how to use the language appropriately in the intercultural communication. Therefore students should be encouraged not only to have a good command of the language knowledge and skills, but also to develop the intercultural communicative competence.In order to examine how well Chinese students have developed their intercultural competence, a research investigation in the form of a questionnaire was conducted in the non-English major students' classrooms. The subjects are non-English majors of Grade 1 and Grade 2 selected from five universities in Beijing. After many talks with the students and the teachers, and based on the analysis of the investigation, it is found that students' intercultural communicative competence was weak and few emphasis was put on the developing of it from the perspective of teachers. Therefore college English teaching has much room for improvement in respect to developing students' intercultural communicative competence.Special attention should be paid to fostering the students' intercultural communicative competence. And the present dissertationendeavors to explore the reasons of intercultural miscommunication, and some strategies to develop students' intercultural communicative competence.The dissertation is divided into six parts inclusive of the Introduction and Conclusion.The Introduction mainly explains the reasons and aims of the writer's writing this dissertation, explores the relationship between language and culture, gives a brief account of the current state of the developing of students' intercultural communicative competence abroad and at home, and gives a brief account of the related concepts.Chapter One, with an analysis on the problems existing in the college English teaching through investigation, demonstrates the insufficiency of cultural input and concludes that due emphasis should be laid upon culture teaching in order to develop students' intercultural communicative competence for non-English majors.Chapter Two makes a further explanation of the reasons of the problems existing in the investigation.Chapter Three analyzes the necessity and importance of culture teaching in college English teaching.Chapter Four serves as the core of this dissertation, some principles of culture teaching are proposed, and some concrete strategies and techniques are introduced...
