This article analyses Xiong Shi-li's "new Mere-consciousness theory" the point of view of answering to the polemics between Science and Metaphysics , demonstrates that he further examines the asked question of the polemics between Science and Metaphysics to uphold the stand of the Metaphysical school and attempts mediating the contrary between the Science school and the Metaphysical school.Though the polemics between Science and Metaphysics was over , its asked questions had't disappear along with the end of polemics . The Metaphysical school of suffering defeat in polemics especially thought about these questions and attempted that could give to a perfect answer . This opened up a new field of the development of Chinese modem philosophy . This was the background that Xiong Shi-li constructed the system of philosophy . Hence , though he didn't directly participate the polemics between Science and Metaphysics , the question that the polemics put forth had run through his theory of philosophy . So we can say that his "new Mere-consciousness theory" is an answer to the polemics between Science and Metaphysics to uphold the stand of the Metaphysical school.The polemics between Science and Metaphysics happened in 1923 , both parties were the Scientific school and the Metaphysical school . The polemics opened up that it centred on the question whether science could solve the problem of life or not and put forth three questions : The first question was the relationship between Science and Philosophy (Metaphysics) , accordingly extended an important question : was the Metaphysics possible in scientific age ? If it was possible , then how to define the relationship between Science and Metaphysics (Philosophy) ? The second question was the relationship between xin (mind) and wu (matter) . The essence that both the Scientific school and the Metaphysical school disputed the question was whether they admitted that social phenomenon had law of causation and man had freedom of will or not. I.e. how is freedom of will possible ? The third question was the relationship between yi (morality) and li (utility) . The focus that both parties were contrary to this question was which outlook on life was rational ? Outlook on life of utilitarianism or non-utilitarianism ?The three questions that mentioned above are the motif through the article .That analyses Xiong Shi-li how to answer the polemics between Science and Metaphysics to uphold the stand of the Metaphysical school.About the relationship between Science and Philosophy , Xiong Shi-li criticized the viewpoint of the Scientific school that philosophy was cancelled by Science from the angle of cosmology i.e. ontology . He thought that Science could only seize the phenomenon of the empirical field and law among phenomena, but it couldn't seize the substance of the universe and the conscience of man , So there must exist the Metaphysics (Philosophy) beside Science . Accordingly , he demonstrated the relationship of ti (substance) and yong (functioning) between Philosophy (Metaphysics) and Science and took Philosophy and Science as ti and yong from two aspects of the researching object and the thinking way . That was inseparability of Philosophy (ti) and Science (yong). He attempted to open up Science from Metaphysics . So his examining to the relationship of Metaphysics and Science not only continued and deepened the Metaphysical school, but also mediated the Scientific school.On the question how freedom of will was possible and its ontological premise i.e. the mind-matter relation , Xiong Shi-li demonstrated the inseparability of xin (mind) and wu (matter) on the gradation of cosmology i.e. ontology and under the premise that xin controlled wu . Accordingly , on the one hand , he demonstrated freedom of morality that voluntary and consciousness unified each other with xin dominating wu , this could rectify deviations and remedy defects to the Scientific school ( it only stressed consciousness of reason .) and the Metaphysical school ( it only stressed voluntar...
