In recent years, scholars have made different kinds of investigations on innovations in English-teaching curriculum for college students. They have made considerable achievements. But most of them mainly focused on the curriculum for English majors, or for non-English majors from Physics, Chemistry, or Chinese department or some other comparatively important departments, in which the students' English examination marks are comparatively high. Few deep studies have been made on the English curriculum and teaching effects for arts and sports majors in universities. This essay mainly deals with the issues of solutions to the problems in the English curriculum for arts and sports majors whose English levels are not very high. The survey concerning the curriculum was conducted among students from the arts and sports departments in several universities in Changchun city. Abundant relevant materials were found from many libraries both in Changchun and other cities, which provided all the information for the self-made questionnaire. Later, the survey was also conducted among some arts and sports majors in universities in other cities of our country by asking them to fill out the questionnaires. The final questionnaire is composed of three parts: 1. the investigation on the target needs and the learning needs, which include seven items, such as the students' motives for learning English. 2. the statistical contrast between the students' understanding of target needs, learning needs and the situation described in the syllabus. 3. the investigation on the issues of English curriculum for arts and sports majors, which consists of seventeen items, including the methodology of teaching these students English. This essay has made some statistical analyses to find the problems of English curriculum for arts and sports majors in universities. Results show that there are a considerable amount of problems for students in arts and sports, which have been clearly shown in the teaching materials, teaching methods and teaching evaluation. According to needs analysis theory, humanistic theory and evaluation theory (formative evaluation and summative evaluation), this paper has put forth some suggestions to modify and perfect the existing syllabus, teaching students of different English levels and some other possible solutions to the existing problems. This essay has made good use of some materials and has done some careful and detailed researches on the problems of the teaching curriculum. As well, the essay has suggested some practical methods to solve theproblems. The aim of the essay is to help to induce the reform of the teaching of English for non -English majors, and to help to improve the teaching effects for those students in universities.
