In the history of contemporary Chinese literature, Zhang Chengzhi is a unqiue. With the life in the pasture lanel as his subject matter, Zhang Chengzhi has kept modifying and adapting his own scope of literary creation. From the earlier fame-winning Black Stallion to the mid-career River in the North and to the later-day History of the Soul, Zhang Chengzhi has kept searching for the outlet of literature and the sky for the freedom of the soul.Contered on the searching complex of Zhang's, this paperbegins with analyzing the path of searching and elaborates the merits and flaus of the search.First, the whole career of this writer here is divided into four periods, each period demonstrating a different orientation in his search.Second, this paper deal with the value of Zhang Chengzhi's spirt of searching on contemporary Chinese literature and contemporary ideaological construction.Third, the extreme development of the author's spirt inevitably brings his literature and mentality to extremes and thus entrapped itself in the disorientation of searching.Zhang Chengzhi is unqiue and the contemporary literature becomes even more charming just because of the existence like him.
