In Chinese Local Colorism, especially the works appeared in the period from 20s to 30s, the status and functions of intellectuals became obvious. A group of intellectuals, who came from the rural areas and influenced by the metropolitan culture, express their thinking about the present conditions of society and life, as well as the expectation about the future in a certain kind of way which is different from other types of literature. As an agriculture-centered country, China has its focus of social changes and developments in urban areas. But how to change the rural areas may be the most important problem to China. From the beginning of this century, intellectuals were active in planning how to defend their motherland. In literary works, the writer either described the backwardness of the countryside from different aspects or made contrastive analysis on sharp differences between the beautiful landscape in the rural areas and the chaos of the metropolitan influenced by the western culture. In one word, they try to display the various factors, which are the blockade of the country's development in literary forms, and both the plot and the characters in such literary works reflect the author's thinking about country's future career. There is always one character in such a literary work that is the intellectual. No matter studying it from observing the way of narration or the independent role played by the character in the work, we can find the important position possessed by the intellectuals. From the historical importance of their irreplaceable position in the history of the tunes and the country, we can see that the study on the " intervention of modem intellectuals" in Chinese modern Local Colorism is really meaningful. So, the thesis tries to explore the problems by starting from the images of intellectuals in Chinese Local Colorism.The thesis is composed of four parts. Based by the different notions of " Local Colorism" and " intellectuals" in the history of Chinese literature, the personal ideas on these will be proposed and the brief explanation on their changes will be performed in the introduction.Chapter One is mainly concerned about the " being on the scene" of the modern intellectuals in Chinese Local Colorism. In this part, it will be reflected that the images of modern intellectuals are always " being on the scene" in various ways from the narrative point of view. On the other hand, the different value- choosing of intellectuals being the writers in Local Colorism, reflects their outstanding positions in Local Colorism. In this case, it will be separated into different situations. One is to explore the reasons to the depression of Chinese rural areas; the other is to show the awakening of Chinese modem intellectuals on the abnormal metropolitan of modem civilizations. Chapter Two is about the intellectual's dubiety on value. In this part different embodiment of value of a certain kind of intellectuals will he explored through their specific performances in different writings of Local Colorism. One situation is that in Chinese rural areas, the sharp conflict between the pursuing ideals and the unchangeable traditions as well as the lackness of communication lead to the embarrassment and aphasia of the intellectuals there. The other situation is that intellectuals looked the people's revolutions as the right method of their embodiment of value. It is believed that one can become a member of revolutionists after the self-revolution. This seems has realized the intellectuals' value, but lost its essence in some degree. The other situation is that the value of intellectuals is denied completely. In the Local Colorism of pastoral style, the intellectuals together with the civilizations are squeezed out. The author provides the readers with the natural beautiful pictures free of the pollution of civilization in man's world.Chapter Four is the conclusion part.
