This dissertation which begins with the reading of Shen cong-wen 憇fi~tions between 1938 and 1949, by exploring Shen抯 writing spirit andpsychology under the cultural environment in 20 th century of China .Itpresents us with an inner world of this intellectual against the background ofhis complex life experience.This dissertation takes the exploring process of Shen抯 spirit andpsychology as a constantly fluid process, and this process can be divided intothree parts as follows:Part one: 搕he unexpected pain?analyses Shen抯 intrinsic literary ideasDifferent from those of the 1 940s, Shen came to realize that insignificantIndividuals were no match for the tidal current ,He made some speeches outof his unwillingness to echo them . As a result ,he experienced quite a lot ofcontradictions in defending and conceding.Part two: 搕he inner world of an intellectual?when the war drove ShenTo the countryside of KunMing ,he acquired an opportunity to inspect hisown life and think it over in such a familiar natural world. It took him eightpainful years to achieve his spiritual sublimation .During this time ,Shenunderwent lots of loneliness and worries.Part three : 搕he change of writing style?Shen replace the 193 0抯distinctive artistic style with a new style. From his works ,we found he didnot put it over. He unable to do what he as much as his would like to.This dissertation as Shen as an lonely pioneer. Shen?significance exist inmaking great efforts to suffer loneliness and agony. Standing on the spiritualruins boldly and thinking the value and significance of life.
