Demonstrated here via analyzing his interpretation of Laozi and Zhuangzis thought is how Yanfus philosophical beliefs as in Tao- ism, epistemology, cosmogony and socio political ones in science, freedom, democracy etc. got nourished and refined from the thought of Laozi and Zhuangzis. In doing so, we illustrate how Yanfu, in order to keep himself abreast of the times, assimilated the traits of Lao zhuang philosophy and tried to make a perfect match of the lat- est development in natural and social sciences in the west and Laozi and Zhuangzis ideologies so as to secure them as both a method of thinking of his own and a powerful weapon in his incisive sociological criticism and cultural enlightenment. The course of development of Taoism in modern times is exhibited simultaneously here to some ex- tent.
