As the epitomy of relevant advacation on XiitgLing, yuan Mei's idea of XingLing freed the poetic creation from the confinement of the pre- vailing dogmas on style and texture, facilitated its return to the pirot of expressing human feelings, and promoted a progress in the conceptual e- mancipation of literature. Studies on yuan's idea of XingLing is a long hard journey in which numerous researches hare been done, but little agreement been achieved. A tentative survey is done to the subject and interpretation is given concerning the aesthetic spirit and value of yuan's idea of XingLing. The thesis is composed of a prologue, seetidn A, section B and an epilogue. Section A, discussing the aesthetic spirit, is divided into four chapters. chapter I is centered upon the semantic understanding of Xin- gLing, chapter II detects the original and historical causes. chapttr III re- veals the cultural meaning of XingLing in Suiyuan Shi hua. Dirided into three chapters, section B expourds the aesthetic value of XingLing in the dimensions of history actuality and future. chapter Ⅰ tells the differences and sinilarities between yuan's XingLing and the precedented XingLing. chapter Ⅱ is focused upon the contribution of yuan's XingLing to the aesthetic creation and practice. chapter Ⅲ generalizes the influence of yuan's XingLing ever the succeeding relevant thories.
