The verse in vernacular was the rudimentary of Chinese new verse. It appeared during the transitional period from the traditional culture to the modern, and it possessed an obvious character of transition. This disserta- tion consists of three parts, and explains the character in three ways. The beginning part: the character of succession to the past. Whether on the concept of verse, or the forms and feelings of the verse, the verse in vernacular was closely related to the traditional culture. The middle part: the artiste character of the verse in vernacular. Most- ly, the divergency between the works by poets with vernacular and the clas- sical verses is being analyzed. Meanwhile, some new aesthetic inclinations are made clear, namely, simplicity, concrete description, casual expression and so on. In addition, the verse in vernacular were characteristic of multi- farious forms and style, flexible rhythm and indeterminate verses. And it calls on readers for some new aesthetic criterion. The ending part: the character of guidance for the subsequent verses. In the two ways of sequentially inheriting and extending in the opposite di- rection, it is expounded that the verse in vernacular has contributed to the subsequent theories and practice of poetics and the formation of new verse s tradition.
