Using abundant materials and methods of comparison and induction, this thesis tries to make a deep research on the yp, character and cause of nonstandard ?in ?form characters to bring the principles of its cause as well as usage to light. The thesis is divided into four parts. Part One: Introduction The nonstandard ?in ?form characters is the opposite of the standard fonn. It is created and used in some dialectal areas of modem times. The delimiting of its range involves the disposal of homonyms and wrongly written characters. The research of dialect and nonstandard ?in ?form characters has some a-. cademic value. Firstly, it can promote the research and the establishment of a complete system of the philology. Secondly, by consulting the survey and cob lation, we can easily simplify and standardize the Chinese characters. Thirdly, some nonstandard ?in ?form charactem were created under the influence of the phonetic aspect of dialect, so making a thorough inquiry of the evolution areas and times has provided important materials for the research of phonology and dialectology. Till now, there has been no deep and systematic research on nonstan- dard ?in ?form characters, and also, no discussion from the angle of careful and systematic research. Part Two: The Types of the Nonstandard - In - form Characters. We try to investigate and classify in two aspects, that is in words form and in words application. From the words form point of view, we can divide it into adding meaning symbol, changing meaning symbol, changing structure and creating new words, etc. As for the words application, it briefly refers to the usage of dialectal homonyms and synonyms. Every type can he divided into different smaller groups according to their practical usage.
