Pawnbroking had played an active role in financial circle of ancient China. But over a long period of time, research concerned this is stagnant. The author picked off pownbroking of Ming and Qing dynasiy, and made some break-throughs. The thesis made a brief review on the development of pownbroking before Ming dynasty. Then if did a thorough study on pawnbroking of Ming and Qing dynasty. It was in this period, the author argued that, pawnbroking reached its pinnacle of prosperity. The sort increased, the service expanded, even joint- stock company, a modern mode of capital, came out in some towns. These developments brought about some widespread and t profound influences on state fiscal policy, transforming of bureaucracy, social custom, literature and art. During the period of the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of Minguo, political and economic turbulence, official exploitation, and so on, made the promising pawnbroking go downhill. The study of mutual influence between pawnbroking and social progress in ancient time will be of great benefit for developing pawnbroking today.
