Zhang Yue was a typical poet dting the transition from early Tang Dynasty to strong Tang Dynasty. This thesis trys to illustrate his contribution to the changes of the academic atmosphere with the textual research for his birthplace and delineate the developmental trace of poetry during the transition from early Tang Dynasty to strong Tang Dynasty by the analyses of his literature theory and poems. This thesis includes four sections: Section one: Zhang Yue's birthplace Zhang Yue's birthplace might be in three possible places: Fan Yang, He Dong and Luo Yang. Zhang Yue said that his birthplace was Fan Yang for the vanity, but Fan Yang was only his prominent family place. He went to Luo Yang and lived there after his maturity. According to the family tree and Zhang Zhi 's annals, Zhang Yue's birthplace was He Dong. Section Two: Zhang Yue's status and contributions to the transition from early Tang Dynasty to strong Tang Dynasty. I. The northern Confucianism advocated the pragmatisms while the southern advocated the proprieties. He Dong was one section of the cultural circles of Shang Dong, which affected Zhang Yue's thinking deeply. H. The depression of the pragmatical Confucianism from Sui Dynasty to early Tang Dynasty. LII. Zhang Yue had changed the depressive condition by recommending pragmatists, praising scholars and cultural construction. Section three: Zhang Yue's literature theory. Zhang Yue constructed a system of literature theory which included: the importance of the literature; functions of social politics and expressing one's emotion; momentum theory, impartial and lingering charm theory, simple and unadorned style, fresh, pure andnatural style. Setion four: The achievement and influence of Zhang Yue's poems. Zhang Yue's poems were illustrated in three periods according to his experience, the poems of each period were classified generally into two types according to the contents: occasional verses, the poems of landscape and living in remote lands. No.1 stage (the first year bestowed by heaven to the first year of sacred dragon). Being written in Si Chuan province, Chang抋n and Qing Zhou. The contents of his poems were still shrouded in the haze of the early Tang Dynasty's poetry, but they showed more healthy disposition than Shen Qian qi's , Song Zhiwen's and Si jie's . They shaked off the limitation of Chen Ziang's metaphor and sustenance theory in artistry and developed toward the lingering charm. NO.2 stage (the first year of sacred dragon to the spring of the sixth year of Kai Yuan). Being written in Yong Zhou, Yue Zhou etc. Zhang Yue paid attention to the political education in the occasional verses while they showed his independent spirit of human dignity. The latter showed healthy and optimistic sentiments. The landscape poems shaked off the limitation of bjective imitation to landscape while pursued the lofty, yast realm and mixed up with Tao Qian's and Wang Ji's style. NO.3 stage(the sixth year of Kai Yuan to the eigthteenth year of Kai Yuan).
