Teilhard was a scientist of the first order and had reflected deeply on the new evidence provided by science. But he was in addition and integrally with his science, not a theologian nor a philosopher, strictly speaking, but a mystic. As he said: professors of Theology would do well to have a spell of what I am doing now. I am beginning to think that there is a certain aspect of the real world as closed to some believers as the world of faith is to unbelievers. Thus, on this position he found a good way to deal with the relationship between science and faith. To the believer who lives by his faith, this world is not one-dimensional. It has a mysterious background. It is not opaque, but ever increasingly transparent. Everything in this world, things and events, and human relationships, had for Teilhard a sacramental character. There is nothing in the world that does not make God manifest. Everything in the world can lead to God, the 'ultimate point' upon which everything converges:Everything and, more particularly in the first place, what constitutes our constant daily portion:work. and are the two of the most famous books of Tilhard's. It is evident that for all the importance of the former in Teilhard's eyes, he constantly regarded it as necessarily leading on to the latter and continually endeavored to bring the two together without confusing one with the other.
