During The "zhejiang Province Nationals Against The Enemy Of Self-defense Group" Study

Zhejiang National Self-Defense Force, an armed civilian force under the leadership of Zhejiang government, plays an important part in provincial history of Eight Years' War of Resistance.The study of the National Self-Defense Force is carried out from 4 aspects in this paper:1st, the founding background, organization system, and its relationship with leader Huang Shaohong; 2nd, arms, political training and fighting ability; 3rd, the political tendency; 4th, the reason of its disintegration. The basic viewpoints of this paper are as follows:1. Zhejiang National Self-Defense Force exits for less than three years, during which it had carried out tens of fights with the Japanese army, and won the Dongzhou Denfence War, Kanmen War, Haiyan War, Wenling War, and Hangzhou War. It is a great compliance to the regular army force, and an encouragement to the anti-war spirit of the civilians. Meanwhile, as a local force, it plays an active role in the defense of coastline and maintenance of local security. Also, because of the lack of weapons from the Kuomintang Government, it succeeded in independently making the weapons by founding a iron factory, as well as supporting forces in other districts by selling some of the weapons to nearby province.2. As to political tendency aspect, on the early founding period the National Self-Defense Force had a close relationship with the communist party. The political work was attached great importance to with the help from communists, which greatly promoted the anti-Japanese spirit. Besides, some of the propaganda and organizational work won the trust among the mass. However, when the War of Resistance comes to a stalemate, the Zhejiang Kuomintang Government strengthened the "Party" education, aiming to gain an absolute obedience from the soldiers and officials. This shows the "Against Communist" and "Restrict Communist" policy in Kuomintang Government3. Viewing from the organization aspect, despite having a relatively strict system, the National Self-Defense Force drew a struggle between the "inner powers" and "outer powers". The purpose of its leader Huang Shaohong to found this force is not only to fight against Japanese, but also to build up his own power. But the local government needs to bring the growth of this force under its control. Therefore, the 2 parts had several quarrels on the abolishment of the force, which eventually put the force in a hard position. In addition, the corruption problem and power struggle problem leads to a disunity and ebbing of the force, and finally the force was disintegrated and reorganized.
