Experimental Study Of The State Of Narcissism And Aggression

The research of narcissism has a long history. Many western researchers focused on this field. In recent years, western researchers change their perspective.They didn't consider narcissism as personality disorder anymore, and they not only thought it was normal personality., but also they emphasized on studying narcissism inner construction and its relationship with behavior in the general population and studying impact of narcissism on the society. In previous studies, the researchers regarded narcissism as a stable personal trait which expresses excessive addicting in self of importance and overstating eligible for special rights and treatment stability. But from the developing trend of personality psychology we can find that the past studies pay attention to trait but ignore the context. For this reason, from the new perspective of developing trend of personality psychology and social psychology, these researches proposes "situational narcissism" and research the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression behavior step by step.There is a commonality that researchers regarded narcissism as a stable personality trait. However, they ignore the individual behavior is influenced by social environment. This research is from the latest perspective of personality psychology and social psychology to study narcissism.This study is composed of the following two aspects. First, based on the view of personality interacting with the environment theory, through the laboratory situation inspired situational narcissism, this research use data statistics to prove the possibility of existing of situational narcissism and propose the concept of situational narcissism. The situational narcissism means inspired by some context, the individual shows the thinking mode or behavior tendentiousness about excessive self-regarding, egotism and exaggerated self-importance. It is the manifest expression of individual's narcissism personality in reality context. Second, the researcher set four different provocative contexts to test the relationship between state narcissism and aggression. Specifically, the study included five parts:Study 1:use experiment to prove the possibility of the existence of situational narcissism. First, the researcher draws up the narcissism preliminary survey and secondary survey. Based on the data, we analyzed the reliability and validity of tests. Second, we draw up the different gender stories to inspired situational narcissism. By comparing the difference between preliminary and secondary narcissism tests scores, we test the possibility of the existence of situational narcissism.Study 2:explore the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression. After inspiring individual's situational narcissism, we use provocative context 1 to test the relationship. Study 3:explore the relationship between state-narcissism and anger. After inspiring individual's situational narcissism, we use provocative context 2 to test the relationship. And that we test the base line of positive and negative emotions, and then we compared the differences between before and after inspired context to make sure the validity of the context.Study 4:explore the relationship between situational narcissism, anger and aggression. After inspiring individual's situational narcissism, we use provocative context 3 to find the how anger influences the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression. Of course, we control the emotion and use T-test to find if the context is validity.Study 5:explore the relationship between situational narcissism, anger, hostility attribute bias and aggression. After inspiring individual's situational narcissism, we use provocative context 4 to find how the anger and hostility attribute bias influence the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression. We use the same method like study 4 to control and analyze the emotion. We conduct our researches step by step, and finally get the following main conclusions:(1) The research finds the situational narcissism tests have good reliability and validity. And the situational narcissism can be inspired by the stories.(2) Through the study 2,3,4, we can conclude that the situational narcissism can significantly predicted anger and aggression. Through regression analysis, we find anger mediates the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression.(3) Through the study 5, we can find when inspired the situational narcissism, anger and hostility attribute bias can separately mediate the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression. Then we use different methods to test and finally we get the hypothesis model: after inspired the situational narcissism, anger and hostility attribute bias paralleled mediate the relationship between situational narcissism and aggression, but there is no causal relationship between anger and hostility attribute bias.
