The song cycle, Pierrot In The Moonlight, is written in 1912 by Arnold Schoenberg who is the leading figure of expressionism. The song cycle, which is written in the composer's atonal period and is also called a chamber-music piece with Sprechstimme singer, is a landmark work of expressionism. In this article we analyze its composing skills from form, melody, harmony, rhythm, polyphony and compare these skills with the ones of traditional tonality music and twelve-tone music. For example, in the music, augmented triads and diminished triads which aren't commonly used in traditional tonal music are widely used in this music. Chords connection technique adopts non-traditional harmonic connection technique instead of traditional functional harmony technique. According to the analysis, we can see its unique composing skills and have a penetrating insight into Arnold Schoenberg's thinking of creation of composition and widen our sight.
