Grice, "cooperative Theory Of Value And Limitations Of The Study

American linguistic philosopher Grice found that when people talked, both sides of the sessions usually can understand outside surface meaning to discourse communicative intention, and make conversation to achieve communicative intention direction development, thus finally achieve communication's intentions. Grice thought that session sides can comprehend communicative intention because there is a conversation mechanism in action. At Harvard University in 1967 Grice proposed Cooperative Principle when he talked about Logic conversation. This is famous Cooperative conversation theory.Grice conversation cooperation theory researchers believe that this theory provides broader understanding ideas for life rich and colorful phenomenon of speech communication, and also brings far-reaching influence to give our verbal communication studies. Before this, people in the field of to this conversation "illocutionary" and "persuasive" phenomenon study more is the truth and the lack of theory describe explanation. Cooperative conversation theory proposing this kind of conversation is situations "illocutionary" and "persuasive" phenomenon gives the scientific and reasonable explanation makes the grammarian economists and semantics of linguistics has a new solving idea to some problem. Cooperative conversation theory make academic circles to linguistic research closer to the rich variety of real life, linguists have perspective is no longer confined to static language shape semantic analysis of language research, more on dynamic pragmatic analysis, thus increasing profundity and practicality for the linguistic studies.However, we are agree with the Grice's conversation cooperation theory together, at the same time, we also should see that Cooperative conversation theory discusses on the principle People in particular session situation based on, on the one hand, whether the conversational situations theory Grice talk about is complete or not? On the other hand, can we put this theory as a whole the principle of speech communication? Obviously, Grice and different scholars all have a different opinion. Based on the discussion of Grice's conversation cooperation theory, this paper tried to explain the Grice's conversation cooperation theory only involves in human language communication in the particular range specified conditions which is not the general principle of speech communication. As well as, the Grice's conversation cooperation theory also is incomplete in its scope of bearing.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part mainly introduces the problem this paper will research, the status quo and the research value and meaning of the research.In the second section discussed the meaning of two key words "conversation" and "cooperate" which is two key words of the cooperative conversation theory. In short, conversation is oral communication, which is not the verbal communication, so we can't leave cooperative principle as the whole of communication principle to discuss; and cooperative is the meaning that to work or act together toward a common end or purpose, and it is different with the meaning of the cooperation of Chinese. Conversation is divided into cooperative conversation and non-cooperative conversation, non-cooperative conversation is that the attitude is not cooperative, cooperative conversation refers to the conversation kept cooperative attitude toward a conversation.The third section mainly discussed the value of cooperative conversation theory. Conversation with the developing direction of the points is forward and reverse. In order to make conversation to positive development, namely wing direction or goal which both sides expected, it may need cooperation principle, cooperative conversation theory aims to promote to positive development conversation. From this point of view, four criterion of cooperation principle to promote conversation positive development has important role. Grice proposed conversation implicature theory also play an important role in promoting to positive development conversation. The conversational implicature which proposed by Grice provides a theoretical basis for explaining the illocution in linguistics.The fourth section mainly discussed the limitations of Grice cooperative conversation theory. Combined with real-life conversation we found that conversation positive development not only need to be quality, quantity, relevance, and manner, the four criteria also need other criteria, such as the conversation to have a common interest, polite, humor etc criteria. Combined with the four situations which Grice cited violation of the cooperative principle, we think that the standards which we judge conversation is cooperative or non-cooperative should not only valued language form of cooperation. From two aspects which language form and communicative goal, cooperative conversation is divided into four types:the conversation which language form and communication goals are cooperative; the conversation which language form is non-cooperative and communication goals is cooperative; the conversation which language form is cooperative and communication goals is non-cooperative; the conversation which language form and communication goals are non- cooperative.
