The shift and the evolution of Hong Kong genre films involve not only artistic innovation, but related to social cultural context as well as the entire system of film industry. It was under composition of these forces that Hong Kong genre films could get transmutation and prosperous development for which Hong Kong is well known as "the Oriental Hollywood". Behind the transmutation of Hong Kong genres is actually the performance of productivity mechanism of genre film. Productivity mechanism is a set of interactive response system based on market pressure, the expectation of audience and the aesthetic model provided by the other artistic forms.This article attempts to give a dynamic investigation of the transmutation of Hong Kong genre films from 1979 to 1989 to depict a map for the transmutation of the original type as well as the emergence and development of new genres within the integral framework of the film industry, film art and social culture, which is based on the analysis of the typical text, in order to define the productivity mechanism of Hong Kong genre films. The part of introduction gives a definition of genre film and confirm the object of the study. Chapter 1 expounds the tradition of genre film of Hong Kong films and analyses the foundation of the existence and development in Hong Kong genre films from the social culture, the industry rheology and the development context of the genre films. Chapter 2 focuses on the transmutation of the Hong Kong genre films from 1979 to 1989 to explore the productivity mechanism. In this chapter, it first introduces the context of the age and the film industry pattern; then discusses the facilitation to the transmutation of the genre films from the update of the creative talent structure; and furthermore, it elaborates the transmutation of the original type of genre films as well as the emergence of new genres to define the productivity of Hong Kong genre films, in which the gangster film are selected as sample to get further analysis of the operation of the productivity mechanism. Chapter 3 is the conclusion.
