Root Stand

On the basis of textual analysis, the thesis aims to dissect the change in terms of literature creation of Han Shaogong during the recent years (after the 1990s).The idea of "root seeking" continues in his three literary works (Dictionary of MaQiao,Hint,South To Mountain North To Water)with respect to the subject matters and literary forms. What should be noticed is that in the new era of China the "root-seeking" idea has undergone a change to a more general one. The unitary root seeking of traditional culture has given way to the plural seeking of roots in terms of value and spirit.The paper is laid out in the following way. Chapter one expounds the textual form and then introduces the change of writing object. Through the object change of dialect use, representation and artistic conception in the literary works, Han Shaogong clearly demonstrates his identification with and seeking of language in Ancient Chinese Literary Theories. And also in the process of this identification and seeking, his understanding and practice of language concept through different times of literary creation can be investigated. The object change is the continuation of cultural identity carried out by the author in the "root-seeking" literature. From the perspectives of ethics and moral values, chapter two interprets, respectively in his three works of different creative periods, the changes of value orientation in the relations of man and man, man and society, as well as man and natures. The change is the exterior reflection of the author's values change, of which the underlying reasons can be found. Chapter three focuses its discussion on author's understanding about the "memory of the educated youth" in his works at different times. Through the restore, retrospection and search of the memory, this chapter looks deeply into the author's definitions on the memory at different layers, and the profound effect of the memory on his writing and his spiritual pursuit of the root seeking.Mainly by virtue of close reading, this paper discusses the author's persistence in the root-seeking process and his continuous exploration in such writing objects as language, value, memory. After the close reading and research, we can find that the loss of traditional culture root seeking has given way to the continuation of multicultural "root". The spirit of perseverance results from the literary pursuit of Han Shaogong as a writer, which exerts a far-reaching effect on the contemporary literary world.
