This thesis is a cohort study on the mountain and rock imago referred in Quan Tang Shi. First, the situation of existing mountain ontology such as the name, system, distribution and amount of mountains is surveyed and reviewed. The general situation of mountain ranges in Tang Dynasty is described. The cultural connotation is also illustrated. Second, a special study is given to rocks. The concepts of mountain and rocks are clearly distinguished. The bizarre stone and rockwork recorded in the Quan Tang Shi are counted. And then the stones in Quan Tang Shi are expounded from the perspective of cultural symbols. In the third part, the thesis stresses on the aesthetic features of mountain and rock imago in Tang Dynasty. A supplement and argumentation to the appreciation of imago is made, employing theories and methods from the ancient gardens and architects. The last part of the thesis is the literature value of mountain and rock imago. The characteristic of literature is discussed from the literature description and depiction. The position and value of mountain and rock imago in Tang poetry are interpreted from two forms of poetry:scenic poems and eclogues.The whole thesis gives a typical induction and analysis to all the mountain and rock imago in Quan Tang Shi, summarizing the main points. Based on the previous research achievements as well as methods like the field work, this thesis studies the important literature phenomenon from a multi-angle:politics, geography, history, garden architecture, folklore, aesthetic and literature. The study fills up the blank in the research of mountain and rock imago, that is, a cohort study of Tang Dynasty. A full discussion is made to the position and features of mountain and rock imago in Tang poetry.
