It is 80 years since the beginning of the new engraving art movement in China. The engraving works had different language characteristics on different backgrounds in history. It was used as a fighting weapon during the periods of wars. The simple and poetic engraving works were created in the seventeen years after the foundation of new China. It was once dissimilated as a tool of political propaganda during the period of the Culture Revolution. In the 80s of last century, its original language characteristics returned. After many twists and turns, the true transformation of the Chinese engraving art happened from the late 80s to the early 90s last century. My essay begins with Black-White Woodcut Painting, Chromatic Woodcut Printing, Water Block Painting and Wood Engraving to explain the expansion of its language expression and the breakthrough of the traditional engraving art. I further explain there is more space for the expansion of the engraving art nowadays, and finally I present my own thoughts about the expansion of the modern engraving art through my own graduation works.
