Thomas Hardy is the most important writer in Britain during the end of the 19th and early of the 20th century. As a critical realist with conscience, he has exposed the trample on traditional civilization from Modern Capitalism and its versa human nature; at the same time, he truly reappeared people's mental dissociation and crisis during the social reforming period. The characters of Hardy's works live in the Victorian era and also in"Wessex"that has profound tradition of patriarchal clan system. Almost everyone fall through the cracks of the patriarchal system and capitalist system, pagan civilization and Christian civilization, as well as traditional concept and new value idea. Therefore, although they struggled in confusion and pain, when both the mind and strength were worn out, they have to compromise on society, or stick in the mire, or come to a sticky end.This thesis mainly researches on long novels written by Hardy; analyzes the revolt of his works on mainstream thought in the Victorian era, and seek a new explanation way on the conundrum causing the characters'Hardy type tragic fate. The thesis strive to find out average person's fate and the writer's attitude on the British countryside in which traditional economy and moral relationship fell apart because of the mighty invasion from capitalism, and to make an analysis or comment conforming to the historical dialectics to appreciate the huge moral content and art tension of Hardy's novels.The present paper is elaborated into four chapters. The first chapter"Introduction"presents the writer Thomas Hardy and his novels, and recapitulate the analysis of the domestic research actualities on Thomas Hardy. And then the following three chapters put the emphasis on the discussion that Hardy's novels'characteristics of revolt on mainstream thought in the Victorian era: one is the criticism on noble morality from three aspects, namely the irony for tufthunting refracted by surname consciousness, the taunt to general Strong social hierarchy, and the query to the excessive advocation on aristocratic personality education. The other is the criticism on the false double moral standards. i.e. the criticism to the different moral value orientation of men and women, the rich and the poor, the negation to pragmatism moral values, and the analysis on several negative levels of industrial civilization and progress. The third is criticism on family and marriage idea, that is, the ideal illusoriness about"family", women's rebelliousness to"male"ideology, and the analysis on advancement that women pursue their self-worth. The"conclusion"lays stress on great and immortal humanitarianism of Hardy's creative works with social critical spirit.
