Form is both the basic instrument of art and design, and the important research focus of art, design and decorative art. The acknowledgement, analysis and development of form, persisted in the entire human history, from the primitive cutting and chiseling tool, to modern computers. In the evolution of art and design history, artist and designer firstly describe and analyze the natural form, then apply the knowledge in the industry design and architecture that employ geometrical forms, and eventually enter the stage of mimicking, grafting and adopting the inner logic of natural forms to develop a set of description method. With the employment of digital technology, a new school of form emerges,"di-form", the exhibits high level complexity and dynamics, which leads to enormous possibilities of non-linear formal configuration. The multi-dimensional, flexible and complex formal expression of"di-form"is highly attractive and worthy to be researched. This paper studies the generation and expression of"di-form"from the view point of geometrical form. By introducing the language of other disciplines, the inner logic of"di-form"can be framed, analyzed and concluded, so as to stimulate new reflection and expression of art design. Di-Form as discussed in this paper, has its origin from architecture design, which greatly expanded the imagination and creativity of architects. It is believed that by studying the theoretical framework, formal principle and esthetic value, new design thinking, idea and practice can be promoted. As a new field, the research of Di-Form constitutes a new promising direction for computation oriented avant-guard. This paper is composed of 4 chapters.Introduction: discuss the research hypothesis, background and methodologyChapter 1: general form and di-formThis chapter compares how the concept of form is employed in both science and art. Based on the definition of form, draw the conclusion of 4 basic types of form, natural form, geometric form, biomimetic form and di-form. The main discussion will be on the principle of di-form and its difference with computer generated form.Chapter 2: multitude: expression of di-formThis chapter address the expression of di-form. Which can be concluded with two parts. The first part discusses the deconstruct of form, which explains how di-form is naturally emerged out of the accumulated thoughts and ideas. The second parts discusses the formal principle of di-form, soft body, random form, freeform surface and informal from Balmond.Chapter 3: the structure of knowledge: generation of di-formThis chapter discusses the language for di-form expression, such as folding, topology, twisting, entanglement, mismatch, overlay, etc. from the non-Euclid geometry, and self-organization, forming, soft form, blob, etc. from biology, and chaos, fractal growth and self-similarity from physics. Study case will be provided to illustrate how such concepts are employed by science. The last part discusses the importance of scientific ideas to the design of di-form.Chaper 4: from di-form to new design fieldThis chapter is composed of 3 parts. The first part discusses the significance of di-form of design. How di-form can manifest the beauty of harmony and argues that the creation of di-form is the natural demand of esthetic creativity. The second part discusses the impact of di-form of design. The third part discusses a design work made by the students and teachers from NAI Landscape department, will be discussed to illustrate the design thinking, technical support and production of di-form object, so as to provide a reference to other kinds of art creation.
