Feminist movement, which sprang up in the United States during the 1960s, pushed the development of feminist art. During the 1970s and the 1980s, there appeared a number of representative artists and works of art, giving a brilliant point to the modern art history. This paper begins with the background of the production of the western feminist art during the 1970s and the 1980s, and then analyzes the causes and the signs of the establishment. This paper argues that the reason of the vigorous development in feminist art has two main aspects: the emergence of feminist art groups and the establishment of the evaluation system of feminist art. The emergence of feminist art groups has played a enormous role for expanding the influence of feminist art in the art world. After driving from an analysis of the representative works of feminists artists' and their characteristics, this paper explains the reason for the existence of feminist art and its high status in the history of art then points out the limitations of feminist art and the predicament of development.
