[Background]The feeding patterns of infants in early infancy are important factors of anemia., and there is a dispute on the time when starting to add supplement food for infants. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, but domestic paediatricians recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 4 months, and parents should add supplement food for infants after 4 months. At present, most researches of infant feeding patterns on the impact of anemia are cross-sectional study, so there is an urgent need to carry out prospective longitudinal study to explore the feeding patterns between infants 4 and 6 months on the impact of infant anemia.[Objectives]Explore the different feeding patterns between infants 4 and 6 months on the impact of the rate of infant anemia when infants are 6 months old, and explore the risk factors of infant anemia, by comparing the differences in the rate of 6 months old infant anemia of whom fully breastfeeding before 4 months.[Methods]There are five research units-Beijing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Nanning, and Guangzhou. Between April and October,2008, the out-patients of research units recruit the research objects, and every research object is followed-up for two months. Collect the socio-demographic characteristics, the feeding situation, diseases situation and weight and height value of each object, and detect infant's hemoglobin value when they are 4 and 6 months old. Classify the feeding patterns in accordance with the feeding situation of infants. Analyze effect factors by Pearson chi-square, t test, and Mutivariante logistic regression, etc.[Results]1 .All of the 436 infants still intake breastmilk when they are 6 months old. There are 71(16.3%) fully breastfeeding infants and 365(83.7%) partially breastfeeding infants. Classify the infants according to the time of fully breastfeeding, there are 71(16.3%) infants fully breastfeeding for 6 months, 146(33.5%) infants fully breastfeeding for 5 months, and 219(50.2%) infants fully breastfeeding for 4 months. 2.The anemia rate(14.1%) of infants who are fully breastfed when they are 6 months old is lower than the anemia rate(27.4%) of infants who are partially breastfed when they are 6 months old. The anemia rate(14.1%) of infants who are fully breastfeeding for 6 months is lower than the anemia rate of infants who are fully breastfeeding for 5 months(22.6%) or 4 months(30.6%), but there is no significant difference between the infants who are fully breastfeeding for 6 months and 5 months(P>0.05).3.Partially breastfeeding before infants are full of 5 months old is a risk factor of infants anemia when they are 6 months old(OR=1.773,P=0.024,95%CI=1.078-2.916). Sometimes or regularly passive smoking during pregnancy are risk factors when compared with non-passive smoking(OR=1 .680 , P=0.049, 95%CI=1.002-2.816; OR=3.428, P=0.013, 95%CI=1.294-9.083).The hemoglobin value when infants are 4 months old is a protective factor of infants anemia (OR=0.887,P=0.000, 95%CI=0.856-0.919).[Conclusions]1 .The anemia rate of infants who are fully breastfeeding for 6 months is lower than the anemia rate of infants who are fully breastfeeding for 4 months.2.The higer the hemoglobin value of 4 months old infants is, the smaller the risk of infants anemia is when they are 6 months old. Infants who are partially breastfeeding before 5 months old and maternal passive smoking during pregnancy have the greater risk of infants anemia when they are 6 months old.3.Encourage maternal to go on fully breastfeeding for 6 months, and give infants supplementation in the right time according to the infants situation.
