Primary hypothyroidism is one of the most common and complicated endocrine diseases, which is a syndrome of hypometabolism caused by the deficiency of the synthesis,secretion or biological effect of thyroid homrone. And its main clinical feature is low basal metabolic rate,such as aversion to cold, cold limbs and fatigued spirit. Until now,there are no radical therpeutic methods for it in clinic.As to the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM),it belongs to the category of"consumptive disease"or"edema",and treatment based on syndrome differentiation is often taken from Yang deficiency of the spleen and kidneys. According to relative literature and clinical experience, professor Yu Shijia proposed that the main mechanism of primary hypothyroidism was not only Yang deficiency of the spleen and kidneys, but also included heart in the stage of the disease. From the clinical-pathological features of hypothyroidism,"deficiency syndrome"exists throughout the development of the disease. Professor Yu Shijia, is engaged in treating hypothyroidism with integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine more than 20 years. In his opinion, according to different clinical presentations and the signs of tongue and pulse, there are two syndromes of hypothyroidism: the deficiency of yang of spleen and kidney ;the deficiency of yang of kidney and heart.The first type is common in his clinical application. Prof. Yu advocates the principal of treating hypothyroidism with integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. Bianzheng Lunzhi, grasping opportunity of using herbal medicine, taking medicine incessantly and individually . His experience on treating hypothyroidism has a good effect.
