Objetive To assess the therapeutic effect of Urinary tract infection (UTI) by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combing with west medicine. Review systematically whether there is enough existing evidences that TCM is effective and safe in the treatment of the patients with west medicineMethods Searching the Randomized Controlled Treaments(RCTs) or quasi-randomized controlled trials usded in clinic from 1996 to 2007.we search the Cochrane Controlled Trials Registe (CCTR), China National Konwledge infrastructure(CNKL),Chinese Biological Medicine database(CBM). The Chinese journals related to TCM are hand searched. Randomized trials adopt west medicine as contrast. The selection of studies, data extraction and assessment of methodological quality were performed independently by two reviewer, then extracted the data and imported them into the Meta-analysis.Results twenty-one randomized trials rials met With the Inclusion criteria of this systematicr eview, including 2277 patients of UTI. Methododlogical quality is considered low in these studies ."Funnel plot' of comparison of effects of UTI with that of routine treatment showed symmetry, which indicated possible publication bia. The results of Meta-analysis indicated: there are evidences to support that TCM relieve the clinical sign.Conclusions By the results of meta-analysis , Chinese medical herbs combining with west medicine is more effective than simplex west medicine in relieving symptoms, retinopathy. However, the evidence is not enough strong because of the few numbers of clinical trials, the small sample sizes of trials and the low qualities of trials. Rigorously designs, randomized, multi-center, large sample trials of UTI for diabetic retinopathy are needed to further assess the effect.
