Objective:No matter in the developed countries or developing countries, the high incidence of diabetes mellitus is a heavy burden for the society and economy, threatening the health of people seriously. So it is very urgent to develop a safe and easily spreading treatment for it.Auricular acupuncture has many advantages because it is simple and effective. The observation on the instant effect of Vagus of auricular acupuncture on lowering blood sugar had been done, providing the evidence for the assume that the blood sugar could be lowered through the reflection of vagus nerve system. Methods:The first part of the research:The 66 patients were randomized into the auriculo-acupuncture group(Group A), 35 patients, and control group(Group B),31 patients. The fasting blood-glucose of peripheral blood of Group A was tested and the time was recorded, and then acupuncture at the Vagus point on the left ear was given. After 30 minutes, the fasting blood-glucose was tested again. The needle was removed.Group B was treated the same but without acupuncture. The treatment was carried out at 7:40 to 8:40 am. During treatment no food or water was allowed. On the following day,the Vagus point of the right ear was punctured for Group A while Group B was treated the same but without acupuncture for comparison. The changes of fasting blood-glucose of every patient were observed two times.Location of Vagus of auricular acupuncture:According to the Therapeutics of Auricular Acupuncture(《耳穴治疗学》),it is located at the lower border of midpoint of helix crus.Operation:The patient was in a sitting or lateral recumbent position. The doctor pressed gently the ear of patient to find out the sensitive spot and then disinfected the ear and inserted the ~#30 needle which was 0.5 cun in length to the level of perichondrium with the thumb and forefinger of right hand and with the thumb and forefinger of left hand fixing the ear while the middle finger supporting from the back of the ear.Medium stimulation was given by twisting the needle for 30 seconds and the needle was retained for 30 minutes after arrival of qi. The second part of the research:The 42 selected patients received the auricular acupuncture at the Vagus as Group A once a day with the two ears used by tunas.Every patient was treated 6 times in total and 252 groups of data of blood sugar were collated.Results:(1) The first part. After the treatment, the blood sugar of Group A decreased while that of Group B increased.Compared with before the treatment, the difference was significant(P<0.01).Compared with Group B,the difference was significant(P<0.05).In the sense of frequency of the change of the blood sugar in Group A,the blood sugar of 53 persons/times were decreased,4 persons/times remained the same, and 13 persons/times were increased, the decreasing amplitude was 75.7%.In Group B,the blood sugar of 19 persons/times were decreased,4 persons/times remained the same, and 39 persons/times were increased, the decreasing amplitude was 30.6%.The x~2 test showed that the difference was significant(P<0.01).(2) The second part.Of the 42 patients, compared with before the treatment, the blood sugar was decreased. The significant difference was seen in the t test(P<0.01). In the sense of frequency of the change of the blood sugar, the blood sugar of 184 persons/times were decreased,17 persons/times remained the same, and 51 persons/times were increased, the decreasing amplitude was 73.02%.Conclusion:Acupuncture at the Vagus point has the instant effect of decreasing the blood sugar of T2DM patients.Whether the whole area of vagus nerve distribution in the auricle has the same effect and how is the long-term effect need to be studied further.
