Since the publishing of Nei-Jing to the 10th century, the TCM doctors described the word"Dian" generally by citing the symptoms from Nei-Jing and Nan-Jing as epilepsy nowadays. However, around the 13th century, "Dian", "Kuang" and "Xian" were three different types ofdiseases, whereas "Dian" and "Kuang" were more close to alienism, but "Xian" were like today'sepilepsy.During the sixth century, Tsao, by integrating Nei-Jing, Nan-Jing and Zhong-Jing's theory, proposed that epilepsy was caused by. the enthetic wind-wicked getting into Ying-meridian, and alsooffered five epilepsies for adults and categories of children epilepsies, the wind epilepsy(Yin-epilepsy and Yang-epilepsy), fear epilepsy and eating epilepsy. Sun Si-Miao in the seventhcentury proposed 20 symptoms for children epilepsy, and the treatments of internal organ epilepsyand livestock epilepsy. Xiao-Er Yiao-Zheng Zhi-Jue (the 12th century) raised a theory that theinternal organs assorted to the internal epilepsies. Chen Wu-Ze proposed a three-cause theory: wind, cold, hot and wet were from external, frighten, fear, struck and awesome from internal and eatingand drinking from neither side. During the 13th century, epilepsy was assumed to be caused mostlyby heat, resulting the blocking by sputum and depressed of apertures. The TCM doctors after the14th century generated a theory of Yin-fire in kidney. Even the medical drugs, traced back to the eraof Hua Tuo (the 2nd century), were treated to epilepsy, the prevalent usages were achieved afterQian-Jin Fang was completed in the seventh century. The formulae occurred in Tai-Pin Sheng Hui Fang (the 10th century) were mostly byexperience, made up with heavy metals, minerals and animal elements. After the proposal of anepilepsy theory by Liu He-Jian, it started a canonical treatment, to prescribe by under reasoning, and formatted the medical care of reason-method-formula-drug. The TCM doctors in the 14thcentury categorized the reason-method-formula-drug to match the different types of epilepsies withformulae and drugs. Lately the TCM doctors also suggested vary treatments to epilepsy andprecautions, and the medical treatment by pattern diagnosis was arisen. The treatments includes deplenish and moxibustion from Nei-Jing, Yin-Yang moxibustiong, earacupuncture, injection at acupuncture points, electrical acupuncture, buried wires at acupuncturepoints as well as head skin acupuncture. The latest research reported that according to the experimental data, the TCM drugs were provedto be effective, and the pharmacology researches became important. Besides to judge the clinicaleffectiveness of the TCM drugs was in standard procedure, the computer diagram and animal modelresearches were also included to examine the criterion. The terminology of epilepsy in Chinese andwestern medicine were more and more concemed. The Chinese medicine doctors revealed that "theturbid phlegm" was related to in vivo acetylcholine hyperfunction, as well as "the Qi vacuity andthe blood stasis" was possible related to "slightly to manifest suddenly".From the western medicine point of view, epilepsy is caused by the persistent of excessivebrain cell discharge. The intemal medicine remedy effectiveness reaches 75%, while the externalremedy, performed by brain surgery, the effectiveness can by up to 70%. The modern epilepsyresearchers use many kinds of experimental methods, creating animal models, examining withscientific facilities, persistently to excavate the pathologic and remedy effect of epilepsy.
