Following hemorrhagic brain damage, cell death in the central nervous systemmay occur due to anoxia. This can be followed by liquefactive necrosis, resulting inwhat is referred to as Encephalomalacia. Clinically, there are several causes ofhemorrhagic brain damage including cerebrovascular disease, head injuries, neoplasm, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc. To date, there is very little that Western Medicaltherapy can provide to treat hemorrhagic brain damage. However, in classical ChineseMedical literature, there is specific information associated with hemorrhagic braindamage and Encephalomalacia. These two pathologies, according to correspondingetiology and symptoms contained in the literature, are referred to as "brain stroke" and"blood stagnation" respectively in Chinese Medicine. This thesis focuses on the investigation and research into the use of bothChinese Medicine and Western Medicine for clinical treatment of Encephalomalaciacaused by hemorrhagic brain damage. There are six chapters in the thesis. ChapterOne is an introduction which includes a definition of Encephalomalacia, its etiologyand pathogenesis. Chapter Two discusses the mechanisms of Encephalomalacia fromboth a Chinese and Western Medical perspective. Chapter Three covers the generaltreatment modalities available for Encephalomalacia both in Chinese and WesternMedicine. Chapter Four discusses Chinese Medical therapy used in clinical cases ofhemorrhagic brain damage arising from different pathologies. This chapter alsoincludes the clinical presentation of the patients and imaging samples (CT and MRI).Chapter Five investigates and discusses the staging of various diseases according toWestern Medical standards. Additionally, it discusses the theory behind integratingChinese Medical diagnostics and therapy, including the use of Chinese HerbalMedicine. Chapter six is the conclusion. According to this research, treatment of hemorrhagic cerebral angioneuropathyusing an integrated Western and Chinese approach significantly improved recoveryoutcomes for the patients. The result was a reduction in the severity of theEncephalomalacia and an increase in the preservation of brain cells. It remains to beseen as to how long the disease should be treated after its onset: this will requirefurther long term research on additional clinical cases. This research should follow theprinciples of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), gathering clinical data andobservations, applying statistical analysis and using expertise from multipledisciplines to interpret the data.In conclusion, our research, together with data collected from previous researchprojects, revealed that using Western diagnosis methods combined with ChineseMedical therapy provides a new and powerful therapeutic prospect for treatingpatients with Encephalomalacia. Further advanced national and international clinicalstudy is advised.
