This work is to find sedative compounds from Juncus effusus L. through chemical and pharmacological methods.This dissertation includes two parts:Part 1, Overview: Summerize the mechanism of commonly used sedatives and hypnotics; Review chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of genus Juncus, 44 references were cited.Part 2, Experiments: Report the details about separation and structure elucidation of dihydrophenanthrenes and phenanthrenes from Juncus effusus. Screen sedative effect of some dihydrophenanthrenes and phenanthrenes. Correspondingly, the present studies are organized in two chapters.In chapter 1, the studies on chemical constituents of Juncus effusus are described. By modern chromatography and spectrometry methods, 13 compounds were isolated, and 11 of them were identified, included 6 dihydrophenanthrenes and phenanthrenes containng biphenyl skeleton: 2,7-dihydroxy-1-methyl-5-aldehy -de-9,10-dihyd-rophenanthrene(D),dehydroeffusol(E),2,8-dihydroxy-1,7-dime -thyl-5-vinyl-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene(F),7-carboxy-2-hydroxy-1-methyl-5-vinyl -9,10-dihydrophenanthrene(H),effusol(I),2,8-dihydroxy-1,7-dimethyl-5-vinyl- phenanthrene(K).3 organic acids: p-hydroxybenzoic acid(G),caffeic acid(J), ferulic acid(C);2 sterols:24-ethylcholest-4-en-3-one(B),β-sitosterol(A). Among them, compounds B, D, F, K, are firstly isolated from this species. Compounds D,F and K are new structures.In chapter 2, sedative effects of 4 dihydrophenanthrenes and 1 phenanthrene have been invstigated along with magnolol and honokiol by mouse autonomic activities experiment.The result indicated that dehydroeffusol has sedative effect and the others have no statistics significance.
