Nine compounds were isolated from the products, which were obtained from total ginsenosides in the leaves and stems of panax qumquefolium by alkaline degradation ,On the basis of spectral analysis, the structures of nine compounds were elucidated as: 20(S)-protopanaxadiol (1), 20(S)-dammar-25(26)-ene-3β,12β,20 -triol (2), (20S,24R)-Ocotillol (3), 20(S)-proto-panaxatriol (4), 20(S)-dammar-25(26)-ene-3β ,6α ,12β ,20-tetrol (5), dammar-20(21),24-diene-3β,12β -diol (6), dammar-20(21),24-diene-3β, 6α ,12β -triol (7 ), 20(S)-dammar-25(26)-ene-3β ,6α ,12β,20,24ξ -pentanol (8),20(S)-dammar-23-ene-25-hydroperoxyl-3β ,6α ,12β ,20-tetrol (9), respectively. Also, five derivatives obtained from 20(S)-protopanaxadiol and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol were identified as: 20(S)-dammar-3β ,20 -dihydroxyl-24-ene-12β -succinate (10), 20(S)-dammar-20-hydroxyl-24-ene-3β,12β-disuccinate (11), 20(S)-dammar-12β,20-dihydroxyl-24-ene-3 β-succinate (12) , 20(S)-dammar-20-hydroxyl-24-ene-3β,6α ,12β -trisuccinate (13), 20(S)-dammar-6α ,20-dihydroxyl-24-ene-3β,12β -disuccinate (14), respectively. Among them, ginsenosides of which aglycon is compound 2 or 5 in the plant of Panax qumquefolium are not found, compounds 2,3,5,6,7,8,9 were obtained by alkaline degradation for the first time, compounds 5,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 are new compounds.By means of 2D-NMR techniques(~1H-~1HCOSY,HMQC,HMBC spectra) All signals of H and C of compounds 1~5, 7~9, 11,13 were assigned definitely and the wrong assignments of compound 3 and its monosaccharide saponins in literatures were corrected.
